So for this post I thought I would take you back in time to one of my favourite geek shows. Well, where do you start with Firefly? This series was the brain child of Joss Whedon. You know the guy that had a tiny hit with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I think he has a small film out next year as well sources tell me it’s something called The Avengers.
Anyway Firefly was his post Buffy show and although it didn’t make it to the end of its full twenty-six episode run. I think it’s still worth a mention.
For those of you who may not have seen the show it’s set five hundred years in the future and follows the renegade crew of the spaceship Serenity. They travel across the galaxy trying to evade warring factions and authority agents that are out to get them. It’s a bit like Cowboys with ships. The captain of the ship is Malcolm “Mal” Reynolds played fantastically by Nathan Fillion. Mal is the sharp shooting quick, talking guy that has a plan for everything. Mal’s second in command is Zoe Washburne played by Gina Torres. Both Torres and Fillion worked with Wheadon on Angel and Buffy respectable. She may be his second in command but she knows how to handle Mal, as they fort alongside each other in the war. She is also married to the ships pilot Hoban “Wash” Washburne. He’s the wise cracker of the bunch. The ship’s engineer is Kaylee Frye played by Jewel Staite. Guess what she does. Then there is Jayne Cobb played by Adam Baldwin, Jayne is the muscle, he also has a funky hat. Then we have the passengers of the ship that Mal picks up in order to make some money. We have a brother and sister, Dr. Simon Tam and River Tam who are played by Sean Maher and Summer Glau. The brother and sister board the ship in some haste but what are they running from. There is also the beautiful Inara Serra played by Morena Baccarin, she is Mal’s love interest. And she sometimes leaves the ship as she is a lady of the night. And last but no means least is Shepherd Book played by Ron Glass. Let’s have a guess at what he could be shall we Shepherd’s heard flocks, people who worship a god are sometimes called a flock. Yes kids he’s a preacher.
So now that I have introduced you to the character’s I’ll tell you a little bit about how much I love this show.
The thing about this show is that Wheadon wanted to step away from Buffy and Angel and try something different. And although most of the story takes place on earth like planets it doesn’t really matter. Even when they are on the ship is story will always come back to the crew being together and being a family even it doesn’t start out that way. The show may have only ran for thirteen episodes this doesn’t take away from the adventures the crew have. This includes a whole flashback episode. When they found out they were being cancelled they didn’t try to rush the story and tie it up in a neat little bow. They do answer some questions but not all. However they are all tied up in the film which called Serenity, if you didn’t know. The only think I can say about this show is if you want to see spaceship’s, gun’s (No laser stuff in this show thank you very much), and a girl with strange powers. Then this is the show for you.
