My Days Off: Television

By Geeky Gem

In this series of blogs I have been telling you all about the things I get u to when I have a day off. This time around I am going to share with you some of the television shows I am currently watching and some I have on my list.

Criminal Minds

As you may know me a little bt by know, you will know I have a habit of not getting into certain shows once it has been on a while. Criminal MInds is one of these shows, I had seen the odd episode here and there and then a friend in work lent me season one and boy am I gripped. I love it, it’s a fantastic show about B.A.U ( Behavioral Analysis Unit) who are called into to find some of the most twisted people out there. It really is a good show.

Game Of Thrones: Season 2

Now season 2 pick up where season one left off and boy does it start off as it means to go on. I haven’t finished season 2 yet but I better get a move on as season 3 starts soon and I for one can not wait. The North remembers is a great season opener and it just gets better and better.

American Horror Story: Asylum

This season is as every bit as good as the first season. The best thing is you don’t have to have seen season one to enjoy the whole host of new and disturbing characters that walk the halls of Briarcliff Asylum. Full of twists and turns and some messed up story lines AHS: Asylum is brilliant from start to finish.

The Walking Dead: Season 3

Now did you really think I could go on without mentioning The Walking Dead. I think we all know how I feel about this show, so I wont go on about it too much. It’s just getting better and better. Watch it, just watch it.

Now Arrow is on my list of shows I have yet to watch, and was I really going to miss it. No as it’s based on the comic book character The Green Arrow and we all know how I feel about comics.  The Story is about  billionaire playboy Oliver Queen who after a violent shipwreck goes missing and presumed dead for five years. However he is later found alive on a remote island in the Pacific. This looks good and I will get round to watching it.

There we have it for another week, see you soon and happy watching.

Wednesday Whimsy

Wednesday Whimsy

By: Caelrona

Hiya all! Wednesday again, already?! Where has the week gone?! Well, here I am; back with more geekyness for ya’ll. So, I can’t believe that there have already been 3 episodes of The Walking Dead, and I haven’t blogged about it! Well… I guess I can, what with Valentines’ Day and me missing the one post and all.. uh, anyway! Aside from The Walking Dead, I’ve also been getting excited about a couple of other things; mainly this whole bad-ass fairy tale kick that Hollywood seems to be going on. Also there is a new television show coming on March 3rd (well, here in America anyway; not sure if it’ll show anywhere else) called Vikings that looks awesome.

Anyway, how about those new Walking Dead episodes, eh? They’ve been freakin’ awesome! Michonne is kicking ass and taking names, Rick is absolutely losing his marbles, Glenn is getting stressed and best of all Daryl is getting screen time! I love me some redneck Daryl screen time. I’m not so happy about Merle being back in the picture, but I can always hope he’ll die soon and I’ll be rid of him. Speaking of annoying; Andrea is getting on my nerves something fierce as well. She’s been pretty stupid lately, and I’ve got to say that I liked her better in the comic. Then again, I find myself liking a lot of the characters better in the comics, although precious few are better in the show, like Carol, or have grown on me like Carl.

So amongst the things that I mentioned I am excited about, aside from my zombies, was the bad-ass fairy tale kick that Hollywood has been on recently. We’ve had a couple variations on Red Riding Hood, a few Snow Whites, a Hansel and Gretel and now we are getting The Wizard of Oz and Jack and the Beanstalk with Oz the Great and Powerful and Jack the Giant Slayer respectively. I keep finding movies, like these two or Hansel and Gretel, that didn’t make my initial list of movies I really wanted to see in 2013. I’m totally shocked by it too, because they look absolutely freakin’ awesome. Hansel and Gretel was awesome, but I already blogged about that. Jack the Giant Slayer (initially billed as Jack the Giant Killer) comes out this Friday, on March 1st in America and March 22nd in the UK. Oz the Great and Powerful, on the other hand, comes out on March 8th in both countries.

Last but certainly not least is the new show I found that starts on March 3rd called Vikings. It looks awesome! I am super excited about it. I first noticed it when I heard Sail by AWOLnation playing on the television. They used it in the background of the trailer, which I thought was awesome. According to Wikipedia; Vikings is an upcoming historical drama series inspired by the epic saga of Viking King Ragnar Lothbrok. One of the most popular Norse heroes, Ragnar was a great Viking commander and the scourge of France and England. Vikings will tell the tale of the epic and violent world of the mighty Norsemen who raided, traded and explored during medieval times. It will tell the tale of the driven young Viking, Ragnar Lothbrok and the gripping sagas of Ragnar’s Viking crew and family as he struggles to become ‘king’ of a large part of modern day Scandinavia and Europe. Ragnar longs to discover civilizations across the seas. With the help of his visionary friend Floki they build a grand new generation of faster and sleeker ships. Jarl Haraldson is Ragnar’s lord and adversary. A man of little vision, the Jarl is suspect of Ragnar’s ambitions and goes head to head with him in a struggle for supremacy. Now doesn’t that just sound freakin’ awesome! I am so excited for it! Take a look at the trailer below and let me know what you think.

Well there you have it; my television and movies for the next little while. I know I’m going to be watching more television than normal the next few months, what with all the awesome stuff going on. I mean, I didn’t even touch on the new Game of Thrones, or the new Doctor Who episodes coming out in April. I know I’m not the only one excited about those! Anyway, I’d best be bringing this blog to a close; see ya’ll next week.

Until next time,

Caelrona – signing off! ❤

Star Trek : Deep Space 9

By Geeky Gem

As you may or my not know I am a fan of Star Trek and one my more favourite versions of the show was Deep Space 9 or DS:9 for short. I loved this show and never missed an episode.

The show is set in the Milky Way galaxy, approximately during the 2370s. It was the first and only Star Trek production to take place on a space station rather than a starship. However it did eventually have a ship added into it by season 3 we came to know and love the Defiant. To be honest this made the show better as they could explore better story arcs.

DS9 first aired in 1993 and ran for seven seasons, ending in 1999. Rooted in Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek universe, it was the first Trek spin-off created without direct involvement from Roddenberry, although he did give his blessing to the concept shortly before his death in 1991. The series was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller, not having Roddenberry on board didn’t take anything way from the work these guys did. If Roddenberry had lived longer I think he would have been very proud.

I think the main reason I liked this show was the fact that it was on a space station and not on a ship. this had led to many a debate with my boyfriend over whether its a real Star Trek or not s it doesn’t move. I say it is as it does have the Defiant, he says nope it doesn’t count and will not watch it. Oh well his loss as I love it.

See it counts right? There is a ship. I love the crew onboard the station as well, especially Avery Brookes who plays Captain Benjamin Sisko. Along with additon of many other great characters and story lines it really is  good show to watch. Don’t believe me then watch it. It has amazing special effects and brilliant story. Put this together with some fantastic characters and you have a show that will have you gripped before you can say light speed. Here are the opening credits for season 1.

My Love of Blu-Ray

By Geeky Gem

As many of you know I have a huge love for movies and I love nothing more than being able to add to extensive DVD collection. However in recent time I have started to convert my DVD’s to this lovely thing called Blu- Ray.

I started off with just one Blu-Ray which I brought not long after I got my PS3, it happened to be 300 which I love. Since then I have added many more movies to my collection and will no doubt add many more. I think the reason I love them so much is there is just so much more detail to be seen in the picture and ear in the sound of te movie.

My most recent addition to the movies that I own was a birthday present from my boyfriend and it replaced some of my favourite DVD’s. The Blu-Ray’s make these movies look so amazing that I feel the need to watch them all again but I must not as I did just that to my DVD’s and some got damaged. I am of course talking about Harry Potter.

These movies are truly stunning the HD picture is brilliant and the sound is great as well, which makes watching these ones fantastic. Movies are not the only thing I own on Blu-Ray having just brought my first Television show on the format for Christmas. This so is fantastic ad has some amazing story lines and a great cast. I havent watched my box set yet but I had seen them on the television in HD and even then I fell in love. Oh Game of Thrones I love thee.

Game of Thrones 2011 blu-ray

When I saw Game of Thrones on the Television for the first time in HD I was taken aback it was just such a good show and it was brilliant. I cant wait to watch it again and then move onto to season 2 hopefully in time for season 3 which has just been giving its UK air date of April 1st and will be returning to Sky Atlantic. Such a good show and amazing in HD.

I guess that’s all I have to say about my love for Blu-Ray’s I have not doubt that my collection will get bigger as time goes on.

Spot Light on Stand-Up: Rhod Gilbert

By Geeky Gem

A few months ago Hmsbeefnuts did some blogs on his favourite comedians, now as I am not one to be left out I thought I would do one on a gentleman I have had the pleasure of seeing live.

Mr Rhod Gilbert is a Welsh comedian from Carmarthen, he didn’t take up comedy until 2002, after taking a comedy workshop course. Of course within 18 months, Rhod had already won several different talent competitions which lead to him being for the Perrier Newcomer award for his first solo show in 2005 at Edinburgh Fringe entitled 1984.

Rhod Gilbert

He has since gone on to perform live shows called Knocking on Heaven’s Door in 2006,  Who’s eaten Gilbert’s Grape in 2007, The Award Winning Mince Pie in 2008 and 2009, The Cat That Looked Like Nicholas Lyndhurst in 2009 and 2010 moving on to his latest show The Man with Flaming Battenberg Tattoo. Besides doing stand up Rhod has also got his own radio show on BBC Cymru along with a television show called Ask Rhod.

However the show I have loved him the most is called Rhod Gilbert: Work Experience where he travels around Wales trying out different jobs sometimes with straight face sometimes with out. If you havent seen it you must its is really good.

Anyway last year I went to see him do stand up here in Cardiff on his Man with the Flaming Battenberg Tattoo tour.

I have to say it was the funniest 3 hours of my life last year, at one point he hadn’t even noticed he was meant to take a break and had been on stage for well and 1 hour and 45 minutes. His brand of dead pan comedy is brilliant and I can’t stop laughing when he tells some of the jokes. The duvet from the mince-pie show still makes laugh. if you have never seen Rhod live or in fact any of his shows you ave to give them a go. He sometimes appears on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow. I am going to leave with just a small clip of Rhod in action.

This clip is about him buying bedding, taken from the comedy roadshow but it does also appear in the mince-pie tour.

12 Movies of Christmas: Santa’s Ride

By Geeky Gem

Yes, I know Christmas is over and that Santa has packed his sleigh away for another year but it got me thinking what could Santa also use. I sat down and I had a think about what other vehicles Santa could use if he ever wanted to pack the sleigh away for good, so here is another good old list.

Kitt – Knight Rider

Now if Santa ever wanted to rock up and leave your present’s in style this would be the way to do it. Plus he good programme Kitt to tell him if the child at the house had been naughty or nice. Kitt is one of the coolest cars around, and he can talk whats not to like. Go on Santa give it go.

The Van – The A-Team

Now if Santa wanted a bit more room for his sack’s of present’s he would be better of with another 1980’s classic  The A-Team van. It can still pick up seed and has some guns should he come across a stick up or whatever. The Van could really work for him you know.

Batmobile – Batman

If Santa wanted something a bit more Hi-Tech he could always go with frankly awesome Batmobile, it has all the bells and whistles and not only that its fantastic looking. I mean come on who doesn’t want ones theses bad boys to drive around in.

Aladdin’s Magic Carpet – Aladdin

I guess this more of topless vehicle and I am not sure Santa would want to be out in the open in the night’s air in late December. However I guess he could just wear layers and that would keep him warm.

Bumblebee – Transformers

This was an easy choice who doesn’t want a car that can turn into a kick ass robot. Santa may like this for just that reason who knows. At least Bumblebee could talk to him through the radio and keep the evil Autobots ay bay.

They you go Santa just a few ideas for if you eer want yo pack up your sleigh and give the reindeer the night off.

Bloggers Block, No Time and A Million Other Excuses…

By @hmsbeefnuts

Hey there, it’s me, hmsbeefnuts. Now I’m only into my second week of my new, less strenuous amount of time writing for my beloved All Geek To Me, and already I’m finding it hard to keep up. I know it’s a poor excuse, especially since I have always found time to write blogs, mostly 3 a week, but at the moment, life is getting in the way. The fact that I’m enjoying the majority of it immensely is the only reason I’m not more ashamed of my bloggers work ethic. Simply put, I’m far too busy in work, and with the people I love most to be able to fully commit my time here, and yes, it is sad that I feel like I’m letting down my fellow geeks, especially Geeky Gem, but I hope she understands, and forgives me for the increasing number of low maintenance blogs. I also hope that anybody who reads this and gives a damn will forgive me too, I am trying my best, I promise.

I have been reading Storm of Swords: Book 2 Blood and Gold by George R. R. Martin. I have just read the Red Wedding Chapter. Now I spoiled myself a few months ago with a Wikipedia search, so I knew it was going to happen, but damn! Martin sure likes to kill off my favourite characters. Apart from the upset at the horrible goings on in Westeros, A Song of Ice and Fire just keeps on getting better, I can’t wait for Season 3 of Game of Thrones.

I’ve also been enjoying Dexter, and Finding Bigfoot, still have not played much of my game library, and have not been to the cinema for like a month. I am going this Saturday however, so I’ll try and fit in a fair few, get really stuck in.

I haven’t even had time to watch my Indiana Jones Blu Rays. It seems I am a changed man, more likely to be found pretending to be The Joker or Cpt. Hook, than to be watching Batman and playing Halo. Christmas time is approaching ever so fast. I have purchased the majority of my presents (thank you but the time is just disappearing like a hobbit with the One ring around his finger. Speaking of which, I can hardly believe that the Hobbit will be out in a few weeks time, I am so excited, yet I know very little about it. It seems I’m out of the Geek Loop a little.

Anyway, I shall bid you farewell, as I have a Dexter to watch, and sleep to catch up with.

Once Upon A Time

By Geeky Gem

I thought seen as I told you about Grimm a little while ago that I would tell you about another show based on fairy tales. This one however isn’t as dark as Grimm but is still a really good show.

Once Upon a Time is an American fantasy-drama television series created by Lost and Tron: Legacy writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, not bad sounding guys right.

Well anyway the show tells the story of Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison), who after many years is found by her son Henry. She gave Henry up when he was just a baby, Henry seems to think that Emma is the only one that can save his town from his adopted mother.

Henry seems to think that every one in town is a fairy tale character taken from his book and that they have been trapped in their town of Storybrooke, people like Snow White, Prince Charming and the Evil Queen who of course is the one that trapped them all there. Each week Emma meets a new character and has to help along with Henry, in order to free them all from the Evil Queen. The show goes from showing Emma in Storybrooke to the lives of the characters in the fairy tale world and you see their back stories this way. This is a fantastic tool for a show like this. Throw in Mr Gold, a man who likes to make deals and you have start of a very good story.

If you haven’t seen this show then it would say give it a go. The story is really good and the characters are fantastic, Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas play Snow White and Prince Charming brilliantly. Add to the is Lana Parrilla’s Evil Queen and you on to a winner, however I think the edition of Robert Carlyle is fantastic I think his character is one of the best in the show. Oh he plays Mr Gold, who is a very dark and mysterious character when you go back and see who he is in the story tale world. This is show any one can get into and it is well worth a go, if you like Grimm you will like this.

I have only watched season one so far as season two has not yet aired here but is airing the US now. Enjoy.

By Geeky Gem

I watch a lot of television and soe of the sows I watch are recommended to me by friends, this is one of those shows. My friend Shaz told me I would like this show and she wasnt wrong.

Grimm tells the story of a Police Officer call Nick Burkhardt who discovers he is a descendent from a long line of guardians that are also know known as Grimm’s, this means he has to try to keep the balance between humanity and the mythological creatures, which are called Wesen, pronounced as vessin of the world. Now he must protect his victims each week as he tries to find out what is going on. Nick wouldn’t be able to do this with a few friends now would he, this is where he meets Monroe who just so happens to be a Wider Blutbad a Wolf to me and you.

Each episode has a Grimm fairy tale in it in some way and Nick with Help from Monroe and his police partner Hank Griffin they must figure out what us happen and stop as well as the series arch that ran over season one. I have only seen season one and season two has begun and I will get round to watching that as well. I loved Season two each episode is really good and you get to see lots of different Wesen, which Nick can only see if they let their guard down, the rest of the time they look human.

It’s a really good show, I am enjoying it. I cant wait to sit down and watch season two but at the moment its trying to find time to watch anything. Its fast paced and each week s something new, some bits are really funny as well.

As season one goes on Nick tries to find out what happened to his Parents, who were killed when he was child and this brings his girlfriend Juliette in to it a bit more as she doesn’t know Nick is Grimm and has a secret caravan full of Grimm weapons and books. This Nick into a battle with himself over whether or not to tell her the truth as he is putting her in danger.

If you havent seen it yet but are worried it might be a bit like Once Upon a Time, then fear not it is nothing like Once Upon a Time. I will however be covering that show at some point in the near future. If you like Grimm fairy tales and want to see a different twist on it then this is the show for you.

Tenacious D

The Most Awesome Band In The World

By Geeky Gem

Now some of you may have read my blog about the bands I like to listen too, if not you can check it out here. On this list was a band that is just too awesome for words, Tenacious D. They really are like no other band, in this thrilling two-part blog I am going to tell you a little bit about the band and there work. Shall we begin.

Now i have already told you little about how the band got together in the other blog, so who are The D, well they are Jack Black and Kyle Gass people, how could you not know. I Love their music, I think  Tenacious D’s music shows off Jack Black’s fantastic vocal delivery, while letting Kyle Gass showcase his brilliant acoustic guitar playing abilities. Some critics have described their fusion of vulgar absurdist comedy with rock music as “mock rock”. I think they might be right here and one of the best video’s is called F*** Her Gently, that video cracks me up every time I see it. Any way this is not what I was going to tel you about I was going to start by telling you about their first album, which was self titled. However before all that came a little TV show called Tenacious D: The Greatest Band on Earth.

That was the name of the show, however you can find all the episodes on this DVD The Complete Master Works, many of the episodes follow Jack and Kyle as they write and perform some of the songs that will later appear on the self titled album and the soundtrack to Pick of Destiny. It’s a really funny show and if you like The D you will like this show for sure. Its funny but you also get to see behind the scenes of the making of this album –

This album was released in 2001, a friend of mine got this for me as a birthday present that year and needless to say it went straight on my Hi-Fi, I loved the cheeky lyrics and the music. This album has such songs as Tribute, Wonder Boy and F*** Her Gently all of which are awesome songs. Along with little skits featuring Jack and Kyle as they go through the rise of being a band skits such as the friendship test and drive thru are the ones that make me giggle.  Just for the fun of it here is the video for Tribute.

Join me next week as we follow the Rize of the Fenix.
