Star Trek : Deep Space 9

By Geeky Gem

As you may or my not know I am a fan of Star Trek and one my more favourite versions of the show was Deep Space 9 or DS:9 for short. I loved this show and never missed an episode.

The show is set in the Milky Way galaxy, approximately during the 2370s. It was the first and only Star Trek production to take place on a space station rather than a starship. However it did eventually have a ship added into it by season 3 we came to know and love the Defiant. To be honest this made the show better as they could explore better story arcs.

DS9 first aired in 1993 and ran for seven seasons, ending in 1999. Rooted in Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek universe, it was the first Trek spin-off created without direct involvement from Roddenberry, although he did give his blessing to the concept shortly before his death in 1991. The series was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller, not having Roddenberry on board didn’t take anything way from the work these guys did. If Roddenberry had lived longer I think he would have been very proud.

I think the main reason I liked this show was the fact that it was on a space station and not on a ship. this had led to many a debate with my boyfriend over whether its a real Star Trek or not s it doesn’t move. I say it is as it does have the Defiant, he says nope it doesn’t count and will not watch it. Oh well his loss as I love it.

See it counts right? There is a ship. I love the crew onboard the station as well, especially Avery Brookes who plays Captain Benjamin Sisko. Along with additon of many other great characters and story lines it really is  good show to watch. Don’t believe me then watch it. It has amazing special effects and brilliant story. Put this together with some fantastic characters and you have a show that will have you gripped before you can say light speed. Here are the opening credits for season 1.

Top 5 Aliens

Visitors’ from another planet.

By Geeky Gem

A little while ago I told you about my top 5 zombies, not long after this I was sat around trying to think of something else I could bring you lovely people. Then it came to me, other than zombies I have a thing for Aliens and creatures from other planets. This lead to a quick brain storm with Beefnuts, yes I got help on this one OK, now can we move on good. Anyway he gave me some ideas and along with what I had, I came up with a list of top 5 Aliens, and here it is.

Tars Tarkas from John Carter

Tars Tarkas is a character in Edgar Rice Burrough’s Barsoom series of novels. A great warrior and leader among his people, the brutal and mirthless Tharks, he possesses a sense of compassion and empathy uncharacteristic of his race. He becomes firm friends with John Carter.

The Xenomorph from Alien

Did you really think I would leave this one out? I love this alien, it’s scary looking, deadly and gets better with each new version. Most of you will know that the Xenomorph is the Alien, Unlike many other recurring enemy extraterrestrial races in science fiction, the Aliens are not an intelligent civilization, but predatory creatures with no higher goals than the propagation of their species and the destruction of life that could pose a threat. This includes the human race and the next alien on the list.

Predator from Predator

Another of my favorite aliens, these hunters from deep space are just fantastic. I know I should spend the movie cheering on the human, but for some reason I like the Predator better. They are characterized by its trophy hunting of other dangerous species for sport. The Predators are depicted as large, sapient and sentient humanoid creatures that possess advanced technology, such as active camouflage and energy weapons, and are capable of interstellar travel.

The Ymir from 20 Million Miles to Earth

As we here at All Geek have mentioned many a time we love Ray Harryhausen, so it would be a crime not to included his fantastic alien on this list.  Now as always this alien was bought to Earth in the form of an egg, after scientists bring it back from Venus. Now as you can imagine the egg hatches and from it comes the Ymir a reptilian like creature. And he is not happy; the Ymir begins to grow at a prodigious rate due to the abundance of oxygen in Earth’s atmosphere. The Ymir eats sulfur so passes up anything else. The Ymir only attacks when provoked, and is perhaps the most sympathetic creature on this list. This leads to our last alien.

Chewbacca from Star Wars

Oh Chewie, were do we start with good old faithful Chewie. Chewie is the best friend of Han Solo and has been with him for a number of years when we first meet him in Star Wars. Chewbacca’s creation as a “gentle, hairy, non-English-speaking co-pilot” was inspired by George Lucas seeing his own dog sitting up on the passenger seat of Lucas’ car. Chewbacca is a Wookie and he became Han Solos’ first mate and companion after Solo, then an Imperial Captain, refused an order to kill him while Chewbacca was a slave of the Empire. Solo was dismissed from the Imperial Navy for disobedience and became a smuggler. Chewbacca owed a life debt to Han and would serve Han Solo for the rest of his life. There is no better friend than this wonderful Wookie.

Again we have come to the end of another interesting list, I hope you have enjoyed this trip to outer space and back again in this look at aliens.

Movie of the Month – June

By Geeky Gem and Hmsbeefnuts

Well it’s June, which can mean only one thing. Its movie of the month time again. I must say we here at All Geek love this time of month, as it means one of us was right last month and one of us was very wrong in our picks. This usually leads to some mocking and much fun. Finally the Blockbuster season is upon us, which makes picking the movie of the month just that little harder.

When I sat down to figure out my pick for this months I looked all over the internet and in my monthly movie magazine trying to figure out what I should pick. It was then I picked up a stack of my monthly magazines and there it was, my pick for June starring at me from the shiny cover.

Prometheus, sees Ridley Scott not only return to one of my favourite movie franchise’s ever but he has gone way back to where it all began. Prometheus tells the tale of a team of explorers who discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race. Now as you will see from the trailer below this looks fantastic and I for one cant wait to see it.

Hope you get a chance to see it and enjoy what promises to be a fantastic trip back to the start of the Alien story.

Geeky Gem

Hello, Hmsbeefnuts here. Up there somewhere Geeky Gem is trying to tell you that the best movie this month is going to be Prometheus. Well, she is almost certainly wrong!! Well, probably not, but my task today is to pick another movie out in June that I believe will be better than her pick, even if I don’t actually believe it! So here goes. June is a funny old month, the movie going public is trapped between to behemoths of the super hero world, Marvel’s fantastic amazing The Avengers, and DC’s The Dark Knight Rises, which clearly I haven’t seen, but will surely be the end to one of the greatest trilogy’s ever made.

Tricky then. I clearly can’t choose Prometheus, which, although looks great and interesting and epic, isn’t really my thing. I’m in the ‘Aliens was much better than Alien’ camp, and this return to the Alien franchise, if indeed the xenomorphs are actually in Prometheus at all, looks good, but not quite what I’m after.

Another option this month is Snow White and The Huntsman. The second Snow White film this year, and by far the better looking. This looks more like an epic fantasy film than a fairy tale, something that I am very happy about. Thor himself, Chris Hemmesworth drops his hammer and picks up an axe, Charlise Theron looks smoking hot as the evil queen and that chick from Twilight, you know the mopy looking one, plays Snow White. This looks dark, gritty and soldier shatteringly good. Scroll down for the trailer….

Looks good right? Until next month then, where my choice is not going to be very difficult at all, I bid you adieu.
