My Days Off: Movies

By Geeky Gem

I feel the natural conclusion to these blogs is to tell you about some movies I have watched on my days off in recent weeks. Now I havent been to the cinema since The Hobbit came out shocking I know, I will fix that. So most of the movies I will talk about here will be ones I have seen on DVD or Blu-Ray at home.

Total Recall (2012)

tr

Now I am a fan of the original Total Recall so I was a bit unsure of this movie. When you sit down to watch and you have seen the other one the one thing you have to keep in mind is that this is not a remake but a re-working og of Philip K. Dick’s book. We’ll remember it for you wholesale, is the book this movie is based on and I have to admit I liked it a lot. It’s a great action movie and perfect if you like that genre.

Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil

evil

I found this little gem on Netflix and only started to watch it as I love Alan Tudyk. Its comedy horror where Tucker and Dale go into th words to do up their cabin so that they can spend summers their fishing and what not. However things do not go as planned when some teenagers show up and think that Tucker and Dale are there to kill them. It’s a funny little movie and worth a watch.

Skyfall

Skyfallcar

Did you really think I wasnt going to buy this on Blu-Ray when it came out. It was brilliant on the big screen and loses nothing coming from your smaller screen a brilliant end to the trilogy. Fantastic acting and an awesome story is what makes Skyfall one of my favourite all time Bond movies.

The A-Team

ateam

I love this movie as it based on one of favourite shows as a kid, as you can tell by now I love a good action movie. There is nothing wrong with this, yes at first i was a bit like really your making an A-Team movie please don’t ruin this. They didn’t but it didn’t make a lot of money hence no sign of a sequel. If you havent seen it check it out.

Harry Potter

HarryPotterS

These movies are my default if I fancy nothing else. So you will find I watch these at lest a few times a year. I wont tell you how much I love them as you should know from other blogs I have done.

There we have it just some of the movies I have watched on my days off.

Movie of the Month: Febuary 2013

By Hmsbeefnuts and Geeky Gem

Wreck-it-ralph_img

Hello and welcome to my choice of February’s Movie of the Month. This month it is the quite simply fantastic looking Wreck It Ralph. A host of Video Game cameos, and what looks like a whole lot of fun. Hopefully I am proved right, I have been looking forward to this film for some time. Check out the trailer below…

Well I have to admit that does look good doesn’t which made my pick even harder. There are some good movies out this month and I have to say I am finding this a hard pick. So I think I going to go with this Zombie movie starring Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer and John Malkovich. I am of course talking about Warm Bodies.

wb

This a movie about a zombie who becomes involved with the girlfriend of one of his victims. It is with this that their romance sets in motion a sequence of events that might transform the entire lifeless world. I have to admit I knew very little about this movie before seeing the trailer bu the second I did I thought I wouldn’t mind watching that so my pick for this month is in fact Warm Bodies. As always here is the trailer for you all to enjoy.

My Days Off: Gaming

By Geeky Gem

On the days when I not working I love to kick back and either read a good book or comic. When I am not doing that I am gaming and yes Kirkiechick is not the only gaming girl here at All Geek to Me. I like nothing more to sit down and lose hours in a good game. Some of favourite games are the Lego ones.

At the moment I am playing two different ones, Harry Potter year 5-7 and Pirates of the Caribbean. However today I am going to talk to you about just Harry Potter. If any of you know me you will know I love Harry Potter and I have just finished reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. So when I got my X Box one of the games I got was Harry Potter years 5-7. I love these games, they can really have you addicted.

LEGO_HP_1_4_years_vid_game

In years 1 – 4 you play through the first four Harry Potter movies and each of the key parts within the movies and books, you even get to play Qudditch during the first ear at Hogwarts. You get to brew potions and take on enemies from with in the movies. Watching the key story parts played out in Lego is not only really funny but really good as well, these games are planned out with fun in mind.

lego_hp_years_1-4_05_lg

The first 4 years are all leading you to something big that comes up in next art of the story but if you have seen the movies or read the books you know what Harry must face.

lego-harry-potter-years-5-7-walkthrough-box-artwork

Then you move on to the following year 5-7 with even more fun to be had as you race to save Hogwarts from Lord Voldemort, and did I mention there is a dragon. A Lego Dragon folks.

hpdragon

This one is harder but still as much fn as the other one. The thing I love about these games is that you have so much to do and so many things to collect that you get to play them over and oer again if you want to get all the extra things with in the game. If you have never played them but like the movies and te books then give them a go they really are fun.

Pottermore

By Geeky Gem

For most of last year you would have read my page vs picture blogs, all of which has included one set of books. Harry Potter that comes from the pen and mind of J.K Rowling. Pottermore is a website from J.K Rowling and Sony where you get a whole new reading experience.

Pottermore_1600x1200

There are so many wonderful things that you can do on Pottermore from brewing potions to dueling other players. You can explore each book and each tab and collect things from around the world of Harry Potter. Things like chocolate frog cards to Berty Bots Every Flavour Bean, you even find exclusive new parts written by Rowling just for Pottermore that add to the details of certain parts of different books. So for you can only explore up to the first few chapters of Prisoner of Azkaban.

pottermore

You start off just as the book does and you get you letter telling you have been expected to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, you then go on to shop at Diagon Ally. Where you can get your wand and then on the Hogwarts Express and on the Sorting Hat. Where you answer a series of question in order to find out which Hogwarts House you should be placed in.

sorting-hat-pottermore

When I answered the questions from the Sorting Hat I was unsure which House I would like to be place in. Any Harry Potter fan more than likely wants to be placed in Gryffindor, or you have a feeling for another house. I didn’t have any of theses feelings however I was sorted just like every ne else and the Sorting House thought I should belong to Hufflepuff.

hufflepuff

When you get Sorted you can not go back and this is the house you will stay in for all of you Pottermore life. I like Hufflepuff but never thought I was one, turns out I am more like a Hufflepuff than I think. Pottermore is a great experience for fans of the books it gives you a whole new level of Rowling’s world to enjoy. There are so many things to do and enjoy at theis website and it is ony going to get better as more and more of the chapters and books open for people to enjoy.

My Top 5 Anime Openings.

By Geeky Gem

You should all know a little bit about me by now, so it should come as now surprise that this little blog has come around. The one thing I like about anime is the opening credits some of them have fantastic sequences so here are some of my favourite ones, with videos you lucky people. Plus if your really good and I can find them I will treat you to both the Japanese and English one’s too.

Dragon Ball Z

This is a show I have already told you about and you can check out that blog here. If you have seen the show then you know how the opening went it was choked full of fighting scenes with a rather catchy song. So here just for you is the English and Japanese opening as I found them both.

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood

Another anime I have already told you about if you missed it you can check it out here. Now here I have gone for the Brother hood opening as I can’t find the one I really like which is a song by Japanese Band Larn En Ciel called Ready Set Go! however this one is just as good. This the Japanese opening as they were the same.

Pokemon

I know its sad but I still remember all the words to this one. I couldn’t help it I loved Pokemon nd still play the video games. This one is full of action and character shots. You also get to hear the Japanese one as it has no video but is called Aim to be a Pokemon Master.

Trigun

Now this is an anime I am yet to tell you about, but if you like the opening credits then you love the show and I promise I will write a blog on it soon. I just love the riff in this and the action in it. Again this is the only version of the opening as they were the same.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

Now this is yet another anime I have yet to tell you about and I am sure at one point I will do just that. I  will however tell you two things one this opening has spoilers and two it has fighting robot’s come on what not to love. This is the full length opening so is about 4 minutes long.

I hope you have enjoyed these anime nuggets of joy and maybe I’ll bring you some more one day.

Tenacious D

The Most Awesome Band In The World

By Geeky Gem

Now some of you may have read my blog about the bands I like to listen too, if not you can check it out here. On this list was a band that is just too awesome for words, Tenacious D. They really are like no other band, in this thrilling two-part blog I am going to tell you a little bit about the band and there work. Shall we begin.

Now i have already told you little about how the band got together in the other blog, so who are The D, well they are Jack Black and Kyle Gass people, how could you not know. I Love their music, I think  Tenacious D’s music shows off Jack Black’s fantastic vocal delivery, while letting Kyle Gass showcase his brilliant acoustic guitar playing abilities. Some critics have described their fusion of vulgar absurdist comedy with rock music as “mock rock”. I think they might be right here and one of the best video’s is called F*** Her Gently, that video cracks me up every time I see it. Any way this is not what I was going to tel you about I was going to start by telling you about their first album, which was self titled. However before all that came a little TV show called Tenacious D: The Greatest Band on Earth.

That was the name of the show, however you can find all the episodes on this DVD The Complete Master Works, many of the episodes follow Jack and Kyle as they write and perform some of the songs that will later appear on the self titled album and the soundtrack to Pick of Destiny. It’s a really funny show and if you like The D you will like this show for sure. Its funny but you also get to see behind the scenes of the making of this album –

This album was released in 2001, a friend of mine got this for me as a birthday present that year and needless to say it went straight on my Hi-Fi, I loved the cheeky lyrics and the music. This album has such songs as Tribute, Wonder Boy and F*** Her Gently all of which are awesome songs. Along with little skits featuring Jack and Kyle as they go through the rise of being a band skits such as the friendship test and drive thru are the ones that make me giggle.  Just for the fun of it here is the video for Tribute.

Join me next week as we follow the Rize of the Fenix.

Wednesday Whimsy!

By Geeky Gem

Wednesday Whimsy by Geeky Gem, what’s this I hear you say? Well Mr Beefnuts have given me special permission to write this weeks whimsy. Now I am going to try to stick to his format and basically talk about a few things I have been doing over the past few weeks.

Well that being said shall we begin?

I have recently brought myself an Xbox 360 and have already started losing many hours of my life to gaming, I havent done this for some time. Yes, I still own my Playstation 3 and I am not about to dump it but I have wanted to get one for some time, so I did. this is the part where I tell you what games I have been playing one might surprise you one may not.

Lego Pirates of the Caribbean

I really enjoy the Lego games they can be real fun and nice easy bit of gaming if you don’t fancy anything to taxing. This one follows all four movies as you play as many characters to become a True Pirate.  The other game I have been playing is this bad boy –

Skyrim

This is my first Elder Scrolls game that I have played and so far I love it, I turned it on to play it and then all of a sudden it was five later. I have feeling I am going to lose a lot more time to this game and I can’t wait. Did i mention it has Dragons? Just saying.

The other thing I like to do when I am not gaming is reading and at the moment I am reading both a book and a graphic novel. My current book is new and was recommended to me by some one I have met online though Pottermore. So Thanks Olivia.

City of Bones

This is a book by Cassandra Clare and is the first book in The Mortal Instruments series note this is soon to be a major movie release. This is not however the reason I picked up the book, it was purely because Olivia said I would like it ans she was not wrong. The story is simple Clary Fray has witnessed a murder but this was no normal murder the victim was a demon and now she is plunged into a world of demon hunters. I am really enjoying it, so if it sounds like the book for you give it try.

My graphic novel of choice at the moment is not a re-read of part one but a first time read of part 2.

Kick Ass

I loved Kick Ass, the first graphic novel was fantastic and I cant wait to read Kick Ass 2 let alone see the new movie due out soon. It’s just so fast paced and so out there. The art is fantastic and if you have never read it you really need there is so much more to it than what you see in the movie.

Another of my pass times is watching Television and not one but two of my favourite shows have started again the US and even with one of them showing here at the same time the other isnt and for the first time in ages I couldn’t wait and I have seen it.

Dexter Season 7

If you have never seen Dexter then shame on you, it is a brilliant show and as it enters its last two season we are drawn into the final chapters of  Dexter’s story. How will it end, hopefully not the way his life started covered in blood, who I am kidding of course that is how it will end. Season 7 starts where season 6 left off with Deb finding Dexter in a less than perfect situation.

Now you dont have to be a genuis to figure out what other show i am about to mention, all you to have done is read my blogs and know me a little.

The Walking Dead Season 3

This is the story arc I have been waiting for, The Walking Dead survivors are back and they have a whole new situation to deal with and this has one of the most evil comic book villains coming up and I for one can not wait. The Governor is just pure evil and I hope they play it out like that, the season opener was really good and i cant wait to see what else they have coming up.

Well there we have it folks, my first and maybe last whimsy. That being said I have really enjoyed sharing this with you. What is it the young people say Laters.

Autumn of Terror: Horror Anime

By Geeky Gem

Hello there, How have you been? I have been trying to tink of things I can tell you about during Autumn of Terror. Then I remembered I like horror but I also like anime so way not share with you something that combines the two? Horror anime it is then, here are some of my favourite ones with pictures and videos you lucky people.

Hellsing

Hellsing was given to me by a friend under instruction that I watch or else, so as I didn’t want to mess with him I went home and watched it. It is a brilliant show that is dark and edgy but with some lights bits in it. The story is about Alucard who works for the Holy Order of Protestant Knights, whose job it is to search and destroy those that threaten the safety of the Queen and Country. This can be anything from undead and other supernatural forces. Alucard is a powerful vampire, I should have mentioned earlier right? Oh well he is and he is awesome and his sidekick is former police officer Seras Victoria,  Alucard turns her into a vampire fairly early in the show, she is the light part I was talking about as she her get used to becoming a vampire is funny. If you havent seen the show here are the opening credits for you to enjoy.

Blood +

Blood + is based on the early life of the central character from the movie Blood: The Last Vampire, Saya Otonashi a seemly ordinary girl is going about her life when she is attacked by a Chiropteran, it is then that she learns she is the only one that can defeat them. Armed with her katana, well what other weapon would have to fight beats of the night. She travels around hunting them down, see a simple story I feel. This is a really good anime and a perfect build up after the Blood: The Last Vampire, which you havent seen it you really should.

Death Note

Death Note is ones of those gems that you find when you aren’t really looking for anything at all. I found this one when I was looking for movies that stared Tatsuya Fujiwara, other than Battle Royale. Then I noticed he was going to be a movie called Death Note, it kind of went from there, first I read some of the manga then moved onto the anime, which blew me away. I loved it, the story follows Light Yagami, a high school student. Who one day finds a mysterious book called a Death Note, inside are number of rules for the use of the book. The book was dropped on Earth by Ryuk a Shingami or god of death. Who was bored and wanted to see what a human might do with his Death Note. The Death Note allows the user to kill anybody whose name they write within its pages. Light decides this could be used for the ower of good, but is that what really happens you will have to watch it to find out.

Elfen Lied

Elfen Lied is another anime I fond when I wasn’t really looking for anything, once I saw the opening few minutes that was me hooked, it’s a really brilliant show. It centres around Lucy, who is no normal girl she is Diclonius she is a mutant, she looks human to a point but then you notice that she des in fact have horns. Diclonii have special powers they can use telekinesis, Lucy who has been rejected by human’s wants revenge and so the show follows her as she try ‘s to get it.

High School of the Dead

As Caelrona mentioned High School of the Dead in a earlier a blog I wont linger on it for long. It is however thanks to her blog that I sat down an watched this show, I mean it has zombies in it who doesn’t want to see a zombie anime. Caelrona is right its a brilliant show and if you get time to watch it then do so. All you really need to know is in the title of the show, its a hifh school that is now over run with zombies and the last of the stuents nw have to surivie. Here are the opening credits just for you to see, if this is the show for you.

There you have it folks some horror anime for you to enjoy.

A Current Trip Down Memory Line

By Geeky Gem

So far I have taken you back in time to the cartoons of my childhood, through the 1980’s and the 1990’s, I’ve also shown you cartoons I have liked in the first decade of this century. I will now take you on a quick trip through the cartoons I have watched in recent years and in some cases am still watching. This list a bit shorter than the last few as we are only a few years into this decade. However I hope you will enjoy it none the less.

Adventure Time

Adventure Time wascreated by Pendleton Ward. The series follows the adventures of Finn, a 12- year old boy whose best friend is Jake, a dog with magical powers such as growing and shrinking or stretching into many shapes. Finn and Jake live in the post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo. Ward describes Finn as a “fiery little kid with strong morals,” while Jake is based on Bill Murray’s character in the movie Meatballs. The series has been a critical and commercial success. This series is known for containing many adult innuendos and mild language throughout.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

This is one my friend got me into and I am very glad they did. It has all the things I remember from the old show mixed with a moden take on some of my favourtie all time ponies, along with some new ones, it is simple and fun and sometimes even has a song. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic was brought back by Hasbro who selected animator Lauren Faust as the creative director and executive producer for the show. Faust sought to challenge the established “girly” nature of the existing My Little Pony line, creating more in-depth characters and adventurous settings. The show follows a studious unicorn pony named Twilight Sparkle as her mentor Princess Celestia guides her to learn about friendship in the town of Ponyville. Twilight becomes close friends with five other ponies: Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie. Each represents a different face of friendship, and discovers herself to be a key part of the “Elements of Harmony”. The ponies share adventures and help out other residents of Ponyville, while working out the troublesome moments in their own friendships.

The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes

The Avengers: Earth’s Mightest Heroes is a new take on the Marvel comic of old that centres around The Avengers. The series initially features a team based on the roster for the original Avengers, composed of Iron Man, Ant-Man, The Hulk, Thor and The Wasp. The team is later joined by Captian America, Black Panther, Hawkeye and Ms. Marvel. In terms of tone and style, the series is based primarily on the original stories by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. However, it also tends to utilize material from all eras of the comic’s run and other sources such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

ThunderCats

Now this is also a cartoon I have touched on in a whole article by it’s self. Which you can read here. All I can say is as the first series draws to an end, is it has been a fantastic new take on a story once told. The animation is just so good and is full of a voice cast that makes the whole show richer. If you haven’t seen it check it out.

Tron Uprising

Tron Uprising, now it may seem strange that I have this cartoon on the list seen as it hasn’t even been aired yet but I couldn’t resist. I have seen the first episode as Disney kindly released it before it’s air date to give every one a feel for what they can expect from this frankly beautiful looking show. The show takes place in time leading up to Tron Legacy and lays out like this, Beck is a young program who becomes the skillful leader of a revolution inside the computer world of The Grid. His mission is to free his home and friends from the reign of the villainous Clu and his henchman General Tesler. Beck will be trained by Tron – the greatest warrior the Grid has ever come to know. Tron will not only teach Beck the fighting and light cycle skills he needs to challenge this brutal military occupation, but he will be a guide and mentor to him as he grows beyond his youthful, impulsive nature into a courageous, powerful, strong leader. Destined to become the next Tron of the system, Beck adopts Tron’s persona and becomes the archenemy of General Tesler and his oppressive forces.

There we have come to an end of my journery with animated shows. I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have and I hope I showed you some cartoons you remembered fondly, and some you didn’t even know existed.
