My Days Off : Reading

By Geeky Gem

There is nothing I enjoy more than curling up on the sofa with a warm drink and good book. I like dong this even more on my days off, I read a lot of books not as many as I would like but I always have at least one book on the go at any one time.

At the moment I am reading two book nd one graphic novel, i find that delving into a book brings me joy as I set off on an adventure in a new world. That world can be anything from Middle Earth to Hogwarts and back to Narnia. One of my current reads will be no surprise to some people but it is Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Now many of you might know I am re-reading this book for only the second time. I have to say I am enjoying it just as much now as I did the first time. Its amazing just ho a book can grip you all over again and have you there for hours. There is just somethign about these books that keep me wanting to find out more about life at Hogwarts and having just come back from the Studio Tour it makes it all that richer. But I might tel you about that next week, if you good. The other book i am reading takes me to Middle Earth.

Now this one is little stranger, I was reading this book many years ago however I misplaced my copy of the book. At that point I had read up to the chapter entitled Out of the Frying Pan into the Fire. So when I got my new copy the first few chapters were a re-read the rest now is pure enjoyment. I can’t wait for the other movies and to reading The Lord of the Rings. The other thing I mentioned I like reading is graphic novels. the series I am most involved with at the moment is The Walking Dead.

This is the current volume I am reading, The Walking Dead my not be set in a fantasy world but it is set in a world that can get into. If I watch the tv show I love it, if I read the comic I love. Basically I love the walking dead. The art in this graphic novel just brings the writing to life and I cant get enough. It really is worth a read if you’ve never read it. Well untill next time happy reading.

For most of last year you would have read my page vs picture blogs, all of which has included one set of books. Harry Potter that comes from the pen and mind of J.K Rowling. Pottermore is a website from J.K Rowling and Sony where you get a whole new reading experience.

There are so many wonderful things that you can do on Pottermore from brewing potions to dueling other players. You can explore each book and each tab and collect things from around the world of Harry Potter. Things like chocolate frog cards to Berty Bots Every Flavour Bean, you even find exclusive new parts written by Rowling just for Pottermore that add to the details of certain parts of different books. So for you can only explore up to the first few chapters of Prisoner of Azkaban.

You start off just as the book does and you get you letter telling you have been expected to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, you then go on to shop at Diagon Ally. Where you can get your wand and then on the Hogwarts Express and on the Sorting Hat. Where you answer a series of question in order to find out which Hogwarts House you should be placed in.

When I answered the questions from the Sorting Hat I was unsure which House I would like to be place in. Any Harry Potter fan more than likely wants to be placed in Gryffindor, or you have a feeling for another house. I didn’t have any of theses feelings however I was sorted just like every ne else and the Sorting House thought I should belong to Hufflepuff.

When you get Sorted you can not go back and this is the house you will stay in for all of you Pottermore life. I like Hufflepuff but never thought I was one, turns out I am more like a Hufflepuff than I think. Pottermore is a great experience for fans of the books it gives you a whole new level of Rowling’s world to enjoy. There are so many things to do and enjoy at theis website and it is ony going to get better as more and more of the chapters and books open for people to enjoy.

Page Vs Picture

Now so far on our journey though page to screen we have covered the first four Harry potter books. Today is no different, as we enter the world of book five and things get even darker for Harry and his friends at Hogwarts.

As always we shall start with the book.

I have to admit something here and as I say it I hang my head in shame, I found this book very hard to get into at first. This may have been due to the fact I bought it on relase day but didnt pick it up for a while after as I went on holiday and accidently left it behind, how stupid was that? As that happened many of my friends had finished the book before I got back and as they are good friends tired to keep  my read spoiler free. This did not however stop them from bugging me on how far had I got.

For those of you who have not read the book here is a brief summery of the events take place at Hogwarts during year five. Harry is spending another awful summer with the Dursley’s when he is forced to preform the Patronus charmon some Dementors in front of Dudley, this results in his exploitation from Hogwarts. However as always some one has Harry back’s and he allowed to appeal against this decision at the Ministry of Magic.

When Harry gets back to Hogwarts he finds Dumbledore will not speak to him and is pushing him away, Harry is unsure why, so he seeks help from other places. Sirius being one of these places. The Ministry thinks Hogwarts is going down hill, so sends in Dolores Umbridge to sort the school out. This leads to Harry and his friends forming Dumbledore’s Army, in order to keep themselves safe. Which leads to a huge confrontation in the Ministry itself and the first death since Harry’s parents to happen in the book.

As I said above I found this one really hard to get into and I didn’t finish it in the time scale that I had the others, it took me a lot longer to read. I know it was a longer book as they got bigger each time, but this one was a hard read, but no less enjoyable. Shall we move on to the film?

Frist up there is another director change in this movie, David Yates steps up to the mark on this one. Also for the first time in the movie fanchise so far, Steve Kloves does not write the screenplay, this time it’s Michael Goldenberg who I felt follows Kolves style.

There are very few cast changes in this one but there are some wonderful addtions, in Luna Lovegood and Nymphadora Tonks to name a few. There is also the nasty but brillaintly played, Dolores Umbridge. Again I feel I have to be honest and say this is not my favourtie of the movies, this one has so much talking and set up in it for the last three that in a few places it can be a bit boring. However that being said my all time favourite scene takes place in this movie and that is the exit scene of Fred and George from Hogwarts, it is fantastic.

Now I feel it’s time to answer the question, as always, which is better, the book or the film? The current score is a tie at 2 a piece. This one is harder than the others, as I struggled with both, please dont think that I dont like them as I do, I really do, it was just hard going. Anyway to aswer the question which is better? I think I am going to have to go with book this time, and this is due to the simple fact there is a little bit more back story about Neville in the book, which is not seen in the movie and I wish it had been there as it makes the character so much deeper.

Now the score is Book – 3 Film – 2. Can film bring it back? Come back and check it out soon. Until then, happy watching and happy reading.
