My Days Off: Television

By Geeky Gem

In this series of blogs I have been telling you all about the things I get u to when I have a day off. This time around I am going to share with you some of the television shows I am currently watching and some I have on my list.

Criminal Minds

Criminal-Minds-

As you may know me a little bt by know, you will know I have a habit of not getting into certain shows once it has been on a while. Criminal MInds is one of these shows, I had seen the odd episode here and there and then a friend in work lent me season one and boy am I gripped. I love it, it’s a fantastic show about B.A.U ( Behavioral Analysis Unit) who are called into to find some of the most twisted people out there. It really is a good show.

Game Of Thrones: Season 2

Game-of-Thrones-Season2

Now season 2 pick up where season one left off and boy does it start off as it means to go on. I haven’t finished season 2 yet but I better get a move on as season 3 starts soon and I for one can not wait. The North remembers is a great season opener and it just gets better and better.

American Horror Story: Asylum

american_horror_story

This season is as every bit as good as the first season. The best thing is you don’t have to have seen season one to enjoy the whole host of new and disturbing characters that walk the halls of Briarcliff Asylum. Full of twists and turns and some messed up story lines AHS: Asylum is brilliant from start to finish.

The Walking Dead: Season 3

walking_dead

Now did you really think I could go on without mentioning The Walking Dead. I think we all know how I feel about this show, so I wont go on about it too much. It’s just getting better and better. Watch it, just watch it.

Arrow

Arrow

Now Arrow is on my list of shows I have yet to watch, and was I really going to miss it. No as it’s based on the comic book character The Green Arrow and we all know how I feel about comics.  The Story is about  billionaire playboy Oliver Queen who after a violent shipwreck goes missing and presumed dead for five years. However he is later found alive on a remote island in the Pacific. This looks good and I will get round to watching it.

There we have it for another week, see you soon and happy watching.

Wednesday Whimsy

Wednesday Whimsy

By: Caelrona

Hiya all! Wednesday again, already?! Where has the week gone?! Well, here I am; back with more geekyness for ya’ll. So, I can’t believe that there have already been 3 episodes of The Walking Dead, and I haven’t blogged about it! Well… I guess I can, what with Valentines’ Day and me missing the one post and all.. uh, anyway! Aside from The Walking Dead, I’ve also been getting excited about a couple of other things; mainly this whole bad-ass fairy tale kick that Hollywood seems to be going on. Also there is a new television show coming on March 3rd (well, here in America anyway; not sure if it’ll show anywhere else) called Vikings that looks awesome.

   02-27-13WW1

Anyway, how about those new Walking Dead episodes, eh? They’ve been freakin’ awesome! Michonne is kicking ass and taking names, Rick is absolutely losing his marbles, Glenn is getting stressed and best of all Daryl is getting screen time! I love me some redneck Daryl screen time. I’m not so happy about Merle being back in the picture, but I can always hope he’ll die soon and I’ll be rid of him. Speaking of annoying; Andrea is getting on my nerves something fierce as well. She’s been pretty stupid lately, and I’ve got to say that I liked her better in the comic. Then again, I find myself liking a lot of the characters better in the comics, although precious few are better in the show, like Carol, or have grown on me like Carl.

02-27-13WW2

So amongst the things that I mentioned I am excited about, aside from my zombies, was the bad-ass fairy tale kick that Hollywood has been on recently. We’ve had a couple variations on Red Riding Hood, a few Snow Whites, a Hansel and Gretel and now we are getting The Wizard of Oz and Jack and the Beanstalk with Oz the Great and Powerful and Jack the Giant Slayer respectively. I keep finding movies, like these two or Hansel and Gretel, that didn’t make my initial list of movies I really wanted to see in 2013. I’m totally shocked by it too, because they look absolutely freakin’ awesome. Hansel and Gretel was awesome, but I already blogged about that. Jack the Giant Slayer (initially billed as Jack the Giant Killer) comes out this Friday, on March 1st in America and March 22nd in the UK. Oz the Great and Powerful, on the other hand, comes out on March 8th in both countries.

02-27-13WW3

Last but certainly not least is the new show I found that starts on March 3rd called Vikings. It looks awesome! I am super excited about it. I first noticed it when I heard Sail by AWOLnation playing on the television. They used it in the background of the trailer, which I thought was awesome. According to Wikipedia; Vikings is an upcoming historical drama series inspired by the epic saga of Viking King Ragnar Lothbrok. One of the most popular Norse heroes, Ragnar was a great Viking commander and the scourge of France and England. Vikings will tell the tale of the epic and violent world of the mighty Norsemen who raided, traded and explored during medieval times. It will tell the tale of the driven young Viking, Ragnar Lothbrok and the gripping sagas of Ragnar’s Viking crew and family as he struggles to become ‘king’ of a large part of modern day Scandinavia and Europe. Ragnar longs to discover civilizations across the seas. With the help of his visionary friend Floki they build a grand new generation of faster and sleeker ships. Jarl Haraldson is Ragnar’s lord and adversary. A man of little vision, the Jarl is suspect of Ragnar’s ambitions and goes head to head with him in a struggle for supremacy. Now doesn’t that just sound freakin’ awesome! I am so excited for it! Take a look at the trailer below and let me know what you think.

Well there you have it; my television and movies for the next little while. I know I’m going to be watching more television than normal the next few months, what with all the awesome stuff going on. I mean, I didn’t even touch on the new Game of Thrones, or the new Doctor Who episodes coming out in April. I know I’m not the only one excited about those! Anyway, I’d best be bringing this blog to a close; see ya’ll next week.

Until next time,

Wednesday Whimsy

By Caelrona

Hiya all! Caelrona here.. but wait, it is Wednesday! For those of you who skipped the last Wednesday post, the short of it is that HMS has given up his Wednesday slot and passed the torch, so to say, on to me. That’s right; from now on I’ll be handling the Wednesday posts, and although I can’t be promising it’ll always be whimsical I shall do my best! HMS did a lovely little intro for me last week, which I encourage you to read if you’ve not done so already. As HMS has done, and dear GeekyGems did the week before last, I shall attempt to tell you about random geeky goings-ons from ‘round my way. Not entirely certain I’ll be any good at that sort of thing, and I will probably end up blathering on until you’re quite ready to swat me but we shall give it a go! Anyway, on to the post!

Minecraft Logo

Recently I’ve found myself with an awful lot of time on my hands. Since I’m more or less am done with my PS3 for a while (I had some sort of skin reaction to the controller. What? My PS1 never did that! Different plastic maybe?) I’ve moved on to random computer games. I’m on hiatus from World of Warcraft, even though I seriously am wanting to play with the new Pandaren race (So much) and I managed to burn myself out on Sims, even with the new Supernatural EP and all my mods. What does that leave me? Don’t laugh, but it’s left me Minecraft and Maplestory. Not really a combination most people would consider, but I’ve been splitting some of my free time betwixt the two and have been thoroughly enjoying myself. Want cutesy adorable gameplay? Maplestory it is! Want to fight zombies and have my wits scared out of me by the creepers (and damn them anyway, stupid hissing noise!)? Minecraft it is!

Maplestory Logo

But alas, even those cannot fill all my spare time – indeed, I’ve played neither for nearly a week thanks to a combination of unpleasant circumstances. For one, I lost my internet connection for a good while, which is why you’ve not seen me posting here at All Geek To Me. I shall spare you the boring details of attempting to restore settings to a nearly 10 year old router and get it to working. That nightmare was enough to put three very tech-savvy people into fits of rage that only geeks can manage in the face of uncooperative technology. Finally, I broke down and got a new router, which after a small hiccough, has been performing admirably well. The second setback is that I’ve been physically unable to play videogames – or, in fact, type particularly well. I’ve sprained my left hand rather badly and after three weeks of putting it aside I’ve been forced to visit a doctor about it, who wrapped it up quite well and set me to resting it. I feel like I’ve grown a flipper in place of a hand, and I’m sure you can see how this is quite the disadvantage for someone who wishes to type or play video games. I must admit, I’ve removed my bandages just to type up this post because typing one handed is incredibly bothersome.

Aside from all that, there are quite a few things I can do even with a bandaged flipper for a hand. Once such thing just happens to be one of my other favorite past times – reading. Among other books, I re-read the Harry Potter series this past weekend, and I must say; dearie me but it has been too long. I should really take a weekend to read them more often. Of course that sort of made it all the better. I couldn’t remember exact details; only my love – or hate – for certain characters and a general remembrance of the plot line. Thusly events were fresh and new for me when they happened, causing all the same (perhaps worse?) emotions and wrenching feelings that reading through the very first time brought to me. Of course not much has changed – I still find myself agreeing with James and Sirius that Snivellus – apologies, Professor Snape – was a despicable, whiny, pansy-assed, mean-spirited git who should’ve grown a pair of balls. I also still find myself mourning the loss of most of the characters you’d expect – Sirius, Dumbledore, Fred, Remus, Tonks and the like.

The Walking Dead Logo

Luckily for my poor strained eyes there is something else besides reading that doesn’t require the usage of two good hands. That would be watching television. Not something I do very often, admittedly, but when I do I make it count. Recently I’ve been watching the new season of Walking Dead, which is quite excellent. Mostly I love how Lori is getting treated like dirt because I never particularly liked that skinny little cheater anyway. Every single episode something happens and I hope she’ll get bitten, but does it happen? Of course not. However, I have to say I’m super excited about the possibility of a zombie baby – Holy cow wouldn’t it be amazing if it ate its way out of her stomach?! – but I have a strong feeling that the series won’t be going that direction. Not only because it would be wonderfully morbid, but also because the graphic novel doesn’t go there. Although it certainly wouldn’t be the first diversion the TV series took. Carl is turning into a disrespectful little pervert, but I suppose that is what happens when you go through puberty during the zombie apocalypse with Lori for a mother. I’m also enjoying the way Carol’s character has developed – the weak simpering crazy lady from the comics is much improved in the television version.

Ah, but it pains me to write this (no, seriously =P ) this post must be coming to a close now. Hopefully by this time next week I’ll have my bandages off for good and regained full usage of my poor hand.

Until next time;

Awesome Anime You Ought To Watch!

By Caelrona

Hi ya’ll! Caelrona here, and I am guest writing for All Geek to Me, mainly because GeekyGems is letting me. I thought about things to discuss, and eventually came back to Anime. Mainly because I love it, but also because GeekyGems mentioned she’d like to hear about some since she sticks mostly to Studio Ghibli. While Ghibli is a great animation studio, and Hayao Miyazaki should be revered like a god for his work, sometimes we want to watch something a little more kick-ass than a G-rated anime, no matter how amazing that G-rated anime may be. I am going to try and hit on some ass-kicking anime series that might not be too popular, but are definitely worth watching if you ever get the chance.

Claymore

Claymore is an awesome anime, and an even better Manga. Awesome fighting chicks in Roman-esque armor, wielding gigantic broad swords (Hence the name ‘Claymore’) there isn’t much more you could ask for, except maybe man-eating monsters. Oh wait, it has that too! Also, tentacles. Sadly for fanboys, there is more ass-kicking than ass showing. That’s right, no fan service for you. So you won’t be getting tons of ridiculous panty shots, or cleavage (because oddly enough, these female warriors actually wear armor that might protect something!) but there will be plenty of gore, severed limbs, blood and bits.

It is based on a Manga by the same name, and follows the manga fairly closely as to the story line. The manga is currently at 22 Volumes, and the Anime at 26 episodes based on the first 11 volumes of Manga. The plot centers around a girl named Claire who is a member of the mysterious ‘Organization’ which created a fighting force known as Claymores. Claymores are half-human hybrids developed to fight man-eating shape shifting demons known as Yoma. The storyline follows Clare on her journey to avenge her mentor, Teresa who was killed by another Claymore for breaking one of the Claymore laws.

Elfen Lied

Elfen Lied is another amazing anime, but in a completely different way. This anime is nothing BUT fan service, carries an R rating and should not be watched around children for multiple reasons including horrible gore, death, dismemberment and lots of nakedness.

Elfen Lied is an anime based on a Manga of the same name. The manga is 12 Volumes long, and the Anime barely manages to top that with a total of 13 episodes.

It follows the story of a girl named Lucy. She is a Diclonius, a mutation with the only physical difference of small horn-like protrusions on their head. Oh, also they have wicked cool, totally invisible ‘psychic’ extra limbs (known as Vectors) that can move faster than sound and vibrate so quickly that they can slice through humans, doors, buildings and even deflect bullets. Not to mention, all known Diclonius are murdering rampaging crazies that tear random people limb from limb, even if they themselves are barely old enough to walk. Anyway, back to the storyline. The anime begins when Lucy breaks out of a containment facility and is found by a local boy named Kohta. However she is no longer Lucy, but Nyu; a split personality developed when she is hit in the head by a .50 BMG round during her escape. The storyline follows Lucy (now known as Nyu) and Kohta, revealing that they have a past that is not really all that pleasant. Blood and gore make screen time when the containment facility sends in other Diclonius to bring Lucy in. Do you think that Lucy goes quietly? Ha!

High School of the Dead

High School of the Dead manages to make me a happier geek than any of the other Animes I have listed (or will) for one simple reason. It is about ZOMBIES. I don’t know about ya’ll, but I’ve had a thing for Zombies ever since I was a little girl, and an anime about zombies? My happiness level? It’s over 9000! Also, fanboys rejoice because there is so much fan service packed into these 12 episodes that it sometimes gets a bit ridiculous.

High School of the Dead is an anime based on a Manga by the same name (sensing a trend here?) The Manga has a total of 7 Volumes and is currently on Hiatus while the Anime has a total of 12 Episodes.

It follows the story of a group of typical high school kids in Japan, who happen to be at school when the zombie outbreak begins. Our hero of the story is Takashi Komuro, who haphazardly leads a group of fellow students (and the school nurse) out of the school and onto the city streets in hopes of finding their families. Of course, their main focus is surviving the waves of zombies who want to eat them all alive.

Kaze no Stigma

Kaze no Stigma isn’t nearly as kick-ass as any of the previous animes; but it certainly earns its place on the list with plenty of fights and some awesome elemental based magic. In fact, that is the main thing that makes this anime so much better than other similar anime out there. Wish you could wield fire, earth or air magic? Well this anime has all that, and some other seriously wicked magic as well, no ‘bending’ required.

Kaze no Stigma, also known as Stigma of the Wind, is an Anime based on a light novel by the same name and it being adapted to Manga. The light novel has 12 Volumes; the ongoing Manga currently has 2 Volumes while the Anime is 26 Episodes long.

Kaze no Stigma follows the life of Kazuma Yagami, a young punk of a Wind Magic user after he returns home after being banished. Why was he banished, you ask? Because his family, the highly elite Kannagi clan, are Fire Magic users, and he lost the duel to wield the highly sought after, super powerful Enraiha, a magical sword wielded by the clan heir. After his banishment he made a pact with the Wind Spirit King, becoming what is known as a Contractor – not just a mere Magic User, but a super powerful Magic User able to tap into all the Magic Spirits of their pact with the powers of that elemental Spirit King. His return is not all happy heartfelt family mush, however, as it turns out members of his family are being killed… by wind magic. Gee, who could possibly be their biggest suspect?

Samurai Girl: Real Bout High School

Samurai Girl: Real Bout High School, more commonly known as Real Bout, is a kicking-ass-and-taking- names kind of anime, with a healthy (or maybe unhealthy?) dosage of fan service thrown in. Plenty of boobs, butts and panty shots here! It centers on a school where you don’t get suspended for fighting – you get graded for it!

Real Bout is an Anime, based on a light novel of the same name, and was adapted for Manga but sadly never finished. The light novel is 19 Volumes long, while the Manga only ran to 6 Volumes and the Anime tops out at 13 Episodes.

Real Bout follows the daily high school life of the vivacious red-head Ryoko Mitsurugi. However, Ryoko doesn’t go to your average high school. She attends Daimon High, and is the current K-fight champion. What’s a K-fight you ask? A K-fight is the school’s approach to settling disputes. Any dispute can be settled by an organized martial arts match known as the K-fight. Ryoko, the Samurai Girl, must contend with a stalker of a friend, crazy people who want to take her down for her title, an arch rival for their shared love interest, a hated nemesis, and.. Monsters. That’s right, monsters. Because a high school that organizes and grades martial arts matches isn’t awesome enough, it also has magic. Our heroine, Ryoko, finds a magical locket that transports her to an alternate universe where she battles crazy, powerful monsters in order to save a world known as Solvania.

Well, that’s all for today folks. Hope you liked my article, but if you didn’t then I hope you at least found an awesome, ass-kicking anime to watch when you get bored. Maybe if GeekyGems doesn’t disown me after this, I’ll do a follow-up with amazing Anime Movies, because sometimes you just want your daily anime dosage in the form of a movie instead of a series.

Caelrona, signing out!

Avenging April: Heroes on Television

By Geeky Gem

Seeing as we here at AGTM are Avenging April, I thought I would delve into the world of Superhero television shows. There have been more than I thought, many I have watched and many I haven’t. I thought I would pick just five that left me always wanting more. Here, in no real order, as always, are five shows that had Superheroes in that I loved.

 Heroes

Oh Heroes, where do I start with this show? For those of you not in the know, Heroes is a series created by Tim Kring that appeared from 2006. The show tells the stories of ordinary people who discover superhuman abilities, and how these abilities take effect in the characters lives. The show for me always emulates the aesthetic style and storytelling of a comic book, its uses short, multi-episode story arcs that build upon a larger, more encompassing arc. Now I really liked Heroes at the start of its four season run, but when the show hit difficulties during season two, thanks to the writer’s strike, it kind of lost its edge. However, that being said, it was still really good, the stories were always good, the characters were deep in places and it left me wondering, much like X-men did, will we ever evolve past our current state?

 The Cape

Now unfortunately The Cape didn’t run for as long as I thought it would, and was dropped from its network after only half a season, much like Firefly. Which sucks as I think this show could have gone far. The Cape, as I said, only ran for half a season between 2010 and 2011, its season finale wasn’t even shown on television, but on the internet instead, which to me is no way for a show to go out. The series was set in the fictional Palm City and followed Vince Faraday, an honest detective who decides to leave the police force after he witnesses the murder of a new police chief by a mysterious individual known as “Chess”. He then goes to work for a private security firm run by, owned and operated by billionaire entrepreneur Peter Fleming. However Faraday is set up and left with the whole city looking for him, for something he didn’t do. Faraday is abducted, but then becomes accepted, by “The Carnival of Crime”, a traveling circus turned bank robbery ring. Here he becomes The Cape. However short-lived this show was it really was worth watching.

Justice League

Look I had to get animated Batman on the list somehow OK and this was the only way, seen as I am not allowed to talk about Batman the animated show. Anyway Justice League is a fantastic cartoon, it ran from 2001 till 2004. Having watched Batman the animated show I had to watch this as it had a number of my favourite heroes in it. From Batman to Flash and Superman to Wonder Woman.

Animator Bruce Timm who had successfully adapted both Batman and Superman into animated shows in the 1990’s, took on the challenge of adapting the Justice League comic book and turning it into an animated sequel to his two former animated series. This new animated TV series brought all sorts of new characters. Ignoring the sidekicks, pets, and other elements of the earlier Super Friends show, the line-up of this new JLA adaptation was created with two things in mind: to pay tribute to the original line-up of the Justice League of America while also reflecting racial and cultural diversity. This show alone sparked the follow-up series, Justice League Unlimited and featured a greatly expanded roster of heroes.

The Incredible Hulk

Now I am not going to lie to you, as a small child when this show was I was really scared of The Incredible Hulk. I only had to hear the starting theme song and I bolted from the room, so my parents tell me. I believe them, I do remember not liking this show when I was a lot younger, but now I am older, and I can appreciate the show for what it is. I still think The Hulk is kind of scary but in a good way. The series is based on the character the Hulk, and ran from 1978 untill 1982. It starred Bill Bixby as David Banner and Lou Ferrigno as the Hulk. In this adaptation Dr. David Banner is a widowed physician and scientist, who is presumed dead, he travels across America, under false names (his false surnames always begin with the letter “B”), and finds himself in positions where he helps others in need despite his terrible secret: in times of extreme anger, he transforms into a huge, incredibly strong green creature, who has been given the name “The Hulk”. The Hulk, besides costing Dr. Banner a huge amount of clothing bills, would then smash and crash his way around for a bit. This I soon came to love when I was older, but when the repeats were on T.V when I was younger there was no way I could sleep if I’d seen The Hulk, silly no?

 Birds Of Prey

I know this is a list of top five superhero television shows, and so far I have shown at least one show that got cancelled before it ran a full season. However I just couldn’t bring myself not to mention another. Birds of Prey aired in 2002, it was loosely based on the comic of the same name. However despite the series debut ratings in America being 7.6 million viewers, the series was cancelled after ratings fell sharply in subsequent weeks. In total only thirteen episodes were produced. Which was a real same as I really enjoyed what the show had to offer, so much so I have them on DVD. The show was set in New Gotham City, several years after it has been apparently abandoned by Batman. In his absence, Oracle and the Huntress have taken over his war on crime. The two are joined by Black Canary, and a host of other characters. A central feature of the series is the concept of Metahumans: Individuals born with powers that cannot be explained. No two metahumans have the same specific ability (or set of abilities) and there exists a whole subculture of metahuman society that the outside world knows nothing about. If you ever have the chance to see this show, as with The Cape, I would give it a go, just remember, it doesn’t last long.

There we have my top five superhero television show, hopefully as I only picked five there will be some you have not yet seen and some you have, There are plenty more I missed out but I hope you will forgive me.
